Steaming In the New Year

Happy New Year Steampunks, Gypsy Punks, Circus Freaks and all you in between or out where ever you are!

I had a great New Years! Not as bombastic as last year, but this year was cozy with chocolate, friendly cuddles  and champagne.  Much can be said for a quiet night after a chaotic year.  To be able to take a breather at the end and just chill out was very nice.

Okay now to the Steamy Business At Hand: Entertainment Around The World!

In Long Beach, California we have:

Her Royal Majesty’s Steampunk Symposium (A Steampunk Convention) Jan 11th-13th

Literary Talent that will be there: HRMSS

OM Grey

David Lee Summers

Girl Genius

Musical Talent:

Lee Presson and the Nails

Unwoman

Cirque Noir and others

This looks like a well put together event!  If I were in California this weekend I would totally be at the Symposium.  For more information check out their great website at http://www.hrmsteam.com/.

In Dallas, Texas we have:

The PANCAKES & BOOZE Art Show Jan 11th @ 8pm-2am

PANCAKES & BOOZE

PANCAKES & BOOZE

This simply looks fabulous!  If you have an artistic bent this is the place for you.  Full nude body painting, all styles of artists, pancakes and booze.  How much for tickets? $5.  Yes sir and ma’am $5.  Wait that’s not all, live DJ’s too.

If you are an artists it is not too late to submit your work for this show.  I highly suggest it.  Check out this video for a better idea of the vibes from this wonderful event.

In New Haven, Connecticut:

Mad Hatter Productions Presents: LET’S GET MAD! At Afterlife.  Jan 11th midnight-6amlet's get mad

Not for the faint of heart my Electronica friends.  This music is dirty, chopped and acid washed.

There will be a blacklight booth where you can get painted up and glowy-fan-tastic for the night!

$20 at the door

Now we are changing gears. Let’s strip of the Neon Fishnets and your glow sticks.  Put the Ravers to bed, and bring out the leather armaments, fox fur tails and your tankards.

In Frankenmuth, Michigan we have:

The 7th Annual Renaissance Masqued Dinner and Ball Sat Jan 12 3pm-midnight

The entrance fee is only $5! Man I’m lovin’ the prices for all these events!  *ahem*

The fair folk of Frankenmuth will be holding a costume competition, and the face of the renaissance mask contest. (Sounds like a lot of fun! and it’s kid friendly too.)

Also all proceeds will go to the Rescue Foundation.  A good cause, a good time sounds like a win if you are in Michigan this weekend.

Alright, I can’t tell a lie…if I had my pick of all the things to do this weekend (barring travel issues) I would be going to this next event.  Oh My God would I be going to this event.

Upstairs at the Ritzy, Brixton Oval, Brixton, London, UK

Drunken Balordi + DJ Sacha Dieu Jan 12th 8pm to midnight

Gypsy Punk

Gypsy Punk

This is a fusion of traditional Gypsy, Punk and Rock beats with a contemporary twist.  In terms that I prefer: Gypsy Punk.

I am a SUCKER for Gypsy Punk music.  Eugene Hutz from Gogol Bordello is my hero.  I want his autograph…and an hour of his time.

But for our purposes here we’ve got DJ Sacha Dieu spinning our Gypsy fused beats.  He’s pretty awesome, check his stuff out at SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/sachadieu

Yet again only £5 to get in the door!

A good line up to start off the new year!  I hope that wherever you are you are having a steamy good time!

So what event will I be going to?

I will be in Ft Worth, Texas hacking portals in Ingress…yes dear Messers and Madams that lovely game by Google.

Don’t know what it is?  No worries, here you go: http://www.ingress.com/

Alright my steamy friends I hope you have a chance to find some Steampunk excitement this fall.  And my apologies (yet again) for my internet absence.

It has been going to good use.  I have been actively working on my upcoming novel.  It is in the editing stages.  It is tedious, but to see it coming together is truly exciting.  You’ll recognize a character or two from my short story Animatae’s Shadow.

The parade in Dublin was amazing. Half a million people showed up to see the City of Science themed St. Patrick’s parade.

What Happened to the Steampunk?

I’ve fallen off the planet and I’m crawling back to the interwebs.

The Yeti: Freezer Burn Effigy

All sorts of interesting things for the month of January have happened to this Steampunk!

First:

Newyearschevia–  Fabulous 2 night Burn to herald in the new year.  We were able to burn the effigy from Myschevia (a burn ban prevented the burning of it in October).

See archived posthttp://elaineturnerthewriter.com/2011/10/16/steampunk-burn-myschievia-burn/

Freezer Burn—  A Central Texas Regional Burn that is a short 2 day adventure of music, art, fire in the cold damp Texas winter.

I was invited to spend my Burn with Cuddle Camp.  It was a wonderful time of cuddles to stay warm and meeting new people at this intense two day burn.

I’ve never been cold weather camping, so the radical self-reliance that I’m ‘used to’ was shifted into a new gear.  How to stay warm, when I’m usually planning on how to stay cool.

It was a great thinking-out-of-the-box experience.

Flooding of the Domicile—  on a personal note, my house gushed 25000 gallons of water…that’s enough water to fill a swimming pool…in my hallway.  It was amazing.  But I’m glad that’s over, and my floors are dry.

Clockwork Con— I missed it!!!! How could such a thing happen!!! Oh yes, refer to above Flooding of the Domicile.

Although, I know that my friend Ting Ting left his mark on many people there.  If you were one of them, please oh please leave a comment.

A slew of other random, yet wonderful adventures befell this Steampunk in just a few short weeks this New Year…and our community is planning even more adventure to immerse yourselves in!

Steampunk: Halloween Wait! Part 1

Is the hallowed holiday of costuming sneaking up on you? Don’t have your costume ready? Have run out of ideas and cash?

Fret no longer, I have done the legwork for you.

While cruising around the inter-webs I discovered that on Etsy, one of my favorite places, prices have creeped up.

Steampunk costuming generally is never cheap, but I was quite shocked that some crafts people are charging upwards of $120 for jewelry that is neither precious, semi precious or all that intricate.  Another shocker was full Victorian garb for $2000.00!

Oh my.

I still love you Etsy. I understand that things will always be a little pricey due to the nature of the site BUT for all of you who are on the holiday budget crunch and don’t mind mass market production clothing I have a few favorite places to share.  I would like to say I’m going off the premise that you fair readers have run out of time to sew, craft and piecemeal together, as we all know, most Steampunks do all the above for their costumes.  Here are two websites with ready-made outfits for purchase:

GoodGoth.com

I heart GoodGoth.  Sorry Gentlemen, this is website is mostly for ladies…unless you like to cross-dress then by all means please do check out this

GoodGoth.com

website it’s wonderful!  If not skip to the section below GoodGoth.

I discovered GoodGoth about 3 years ago.  It is not a Halloween specific or character costume website.  They are dedicated to Gothic inspired clothing, but they have so much more.  Their clothing is very good quality and their prices are fabulous.  They also send out weekly coupons.

They cater to the Gothic crowd, but they have integrated Steampunk into their wares.

So even if you don’t wear this clothing year ’round, it’s a wonderful place for costuming and accessorizing. I am partial to their shoes too (must avert mine eyes or I’ll buy their whole stock of boots).

Check out the fine folks at GoodGoth and let me know what you think!

DressLikeAPirate.com

DressLkeAPirate.com isn’t too bad.  There is more for men to find that’s for sure.  It’s still a bit pricey, but there’s also the advantage of the being able to buy a complete premade costume. If you don’t want to do that and just need an extra jabot, pirate shirt, pair of boots, or walking stick this is an excellent resource.

I have not personally bought anything from this site, but I have spoken to customers who have had a pleasurable experience and little hassle with their transactions.

DressLikeAPirate.com

I want to emphasize that they do have a variety of men’s clothing.  I know that it is very difficult to find a good variety of menswear and accessories for Steampunk. It is a shame really.

For the rest of the week I will be posting websites that cater to Steampunk and Steampunk-esqe costuming that is affordable and not widely talked about. Everyone who has been around the Steampunk scene has heard of SteampunkEmporium, and the GentlemensEmporium…at least I hope so. If not men go check it out, but prices can get steep quick. Don’t be afraid of switching out $80.00 trousers for $8.00 thrifted trousers.

Also guys don’t be afraid of looking in the women’s section at your local thrift store for good pants.  Steampunk and Neo-Victorian patterns tended toward the bold and ridiculous.  Your maleness will not be diminished in the slightest if you pick up the most hideous paisley printed or stripped pants from the women’s aisle.  In fact your panache points will go up infinitely.  A paisley print pant with a solid colored vest, add boots or dress shoes, you are on your way to a damned fine outfit.

I speak from experience.  Several men in the Gypsy Steam Circus ventured into the female pant territory to rock out their Steampunk look and it worked better than any of us expected.  I’m talking purple paisley pants with purple stripped vest, black leather top hat (yes you know who you are).  It was great, and they had an overwhelming positive feedback about their outfit.  No one would have guessed it was all female clothing.

If you have any favorite costuming websites please share by leaving a comment.  If you have an Etsy or any other independent shop that caters to Steampunk costuming do not be afraid of self promotion, leave your link in the comment section.

In Part 2 I’ll be mentioning corsets and more mens costuming.

Steampunk: Burn Myschievia Burn

Oct 6 – 10th I participated in my first MyschieviaBurn in North Texas.

Gypsy Steam Circus

It is tiny compared to Burning Man, but…the atmosphere is unique.  The performance art was one of a kind.  I have never experienced that level of all-consuming personal performance for four days straight at BRC or Burning Flipside.

Who are these scions of performance  art? Their name is C.O.L.D camp.  They are the antagonists, they are the assholes, they are the ones that push you to know your boundaries.  It was annoying, it was frustrating and I learned how I handle conflict in both positive and negative forms. COLD was the most alien form of Burner I have ever met, adding to Myschievia’s unique feel.

The community is so small that you don’t just run into people have a single conversation that may or may not change your view-point on life then never see them again…nope it’s a community where you see the same faces, the same beautiful Burners and are able to go back for more stimulating conversation.

I loved that.  I also love the unique one time wonder of meeting people on the playa at BRC, I wouldn’t change that for the world.

Now I would like to share a very personal story:

At Burning Flipside this past May, Positron (my other-half) and I ran into an ambiguously brown smiling young man by the all night Taco Stand, beside the Lava Lounge.  Electronica rang out its oontz-oontz as we three ran the gamut of conversation on late night snack attack food.  It turns out that our new-found friend prefers Reubens. Yes. That’s right.  The sandwich to end all sandwiches.  He so became known to us as Reuben.  His ‘grassy’ playa name had been bequeathed unto him.

We three proceeded to journey together.  It was a journey that lead us to play Giant Jenga, where Positron earned another name “The GrassHoppa King”, we continued to wander about drunkenly speaking of grasshopper, tasty Reuben, we tested our skill toy skills at the Electro Circus, we waxed poetic, or drunken, about the amazing art and weaved our way back to the Lava Lounge where we danced, danced, danced and danced until dawn heralded the morning.

Reuben was like the best friend Grasshoppa King and I never knew we hadn’t had.

We tried exchanging information (pitiful attempt all our phones were dead and of course who brings pen and paper to these things…obviously not us), so when we went back to default world our default names were so generic we were unable to find each other on social media.

Oh well, after terrible disappointment we just put it out of our minds as best as we could, knowing the playa gives and the playa takes away.

Back to Present:

My first night at Myschievia we had just set up camp “The Gypsy Steam Circus”.  I was free to wander…so of course I did.  I made it no further than the Doodle Camp…large swathes of butcher paper and crayons called to me, so I went and…doodled.  After a few moments of chatting with the lovely Burners running the Doodle Camp, out of the corner of my eye I saw some one else walk up, I thought nothing of it and continued to doodle.  Then he spoke.  The echo of a thousand Reuben sandwiches clamored in my ears, I turned, pointed, jaw dropped in the vicinity of my cleavage, stuttering over the words “Rueben!”

He turned and laughed, we laughed, we hugged, we hugged, we laughed, this continued for a disgracefully long time.  But it was perfect, it was so beautifully perfect to see this beautiful soul again, and that his joy was as fierce as my own made it all that much more potent.

We spun in circles in our glee, finally the ground rose to cushion our fall.  Laying breathless, still hugging we laughed on, until our long dormant senses returned.  We staggered to our feet in search of Grasshoppa King.

The sheer chances of us meeting again were so slim.  None of us had talked about going to Myschievia.  This was truly a gift from the playa.

This time around all three of us actually had phones that were not dead, we could successfully trade our information.  I will freely admit that this is the first time in the five Burns I’ve been to where personal contact info was given.

Having the post-burn connection with Reuben has been invaluable.

After a Burn there is always a high, then a lull, then with any luck a decompression near you.  My personal decompression has been speaker phone chats with Reuben of our personal experiences from Myschievia. This Burn (or UnBurn, there was a burn ban in effect.  An amazing light show that looked just like real flame stole the show) was the most self exploratory Burn since my very first Burn.

I’ve learned more about myself as a person, where my boundaries are, and what I need or want from the Burning Man experience.

Reuben and GrassHoppa King, I want to thank you for being with me on the journey to adventure.

More on the Myschievia Experience Later This Week.

Steampunk: Burns and Steam

Steampunk meet the Burners.

The Man Burning- image by Aaron Logan

Steampunk communities and events are on the rise. As such it is only a matter of time until said Steampunks meet other activity driven groups such as the Burners.

Who the hell are the Burners? Ah. That’s a loaded question, so let’s get down to brass tacks.

Burners are people who attend:

1. Burning Man

2. Regional Burns (worldwide)

Responses frequently given after mentioning Burning Man is this:

Burning Man?! Isn’t that some crazy party in the desert that Malcolm in the Middle was at? Wait! Wasn’t that mentioned in a movie, where the dad kept taking his new wives to Burning Man and they were high as a kite? I didn’t think that was real!

Burning Man and all its regionals are very much real. Burning Man (the ‘main’ burn with upwards

Satellite Image of Burning Man

of 60,000 people in attendance) begins the week prior to Labor Day and ends on Labor Day Monday. It is considered an extreme festival, a survivalist camping heaven, artists haven, an epic party like you’ve never seen, etc, etc. It is a temporary city that goes up, and when all is said and done, the Burners take their trash and leave no trace after celebrating life and freedom of expression.

What IS Burning Man?

“Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind.” – BurningMan.com

Burns are where the masses go to take off the mask of day to day triviality and be who you really are. To wave your freak flag if you will.  It also gathers some of the most talented visionaries. Burning Man funds most of the huge interactive art installations that come to the Burn.

It was only a matter of time for Steampunk artists and craftsmen to venture into the Burning

Neverwas Haul - Art Car

Community.

On a small scale the lauded Airship Isabella has ventured into the Burning community. The Isabella was actually conceived at the Texas Regional Burn Burning Flipside.

Gypsy Steam Circus, is a group currently being put together for the sole purpose of bringing Steampunk, Gypsy Fusion with a dash of Circus to the Burn.  GSC will be gathering its ranks for the for Myschievia (a Regional in East Texas) over the Columbus Holiday.

I have been a Burner since 2009, I’ve made two fabulous Pilgrimages to Black Rock City (the name of the temporary city that goes up for one fabulous week).  During 2011 I bowed out of BRC to visit two regional burns, Flipside and in a few short weeks I’ll be at Myschievia.

These two Burns are quite small compared to the massive size of Burning Man, but they are no less powerful.

You may have noticed O.M. Grey’s latest tweets and Facebook posts mentioned her Pilgrimage to Black Rock City and Burning Man this year.  Steampunk is rapidly being integrated into other highly creative events and festivals.

It isn’t all about the art (when I say art I mean interactive Rubiks Cubes that are 4 stories high, that

Steampunk Octopus

can be turned by small hand held devices 20+ yards away, giant metal art pieces created for people to look at and climb on to see the view from the top).  There is also an indescribable feeling that comes over you when you stand in the middle of the desert.  For some it is a spiritual experience. Some come to the desert to find themselves, some to party, some to get away from reality, but when the Burn is over somehow Burning Man has become the reality.  It is a special place where your true self is discovered.  It can be messy and it can be beautiful.  But every year when you are met at the Gates by the Greeters, the first thing they say is “Welcome Home” and you suddenly realize it IS home.

I am so excited seeing two of the things I love most come together.  Burning Man and its subsequent regional Burns are not for everyone.  But if you have a keen sense of adventure and an open mind Burning Man might become home for you too.
